A Comparative Study of Two English Versions of Ah Q Zheng Zhuan from the Perspective of Functional Equivalence
1. Introduction
1.1. Aims of the research
Among the various western translation theories, Eugune Nidarsquo;s theory of functional equivalence is one of the most famous and recognized ranslation theories. Nida defines translation as “translating consists in reproducing in the receptor language the closest natural equivalent of source-language message, first in terms of meaning and secondly in terms of style”. Nida focuses on the reaponse of the receptor and the theory evaluates whether the translation successfully according to those readers who receive the translated text.
From the perspective of Nidarsquo;s functional equivalence theory, this paper aims to explore the realization of functional equivalence in the two English versions of Ah Q Zheng Zhuan, a short story written by Lu Xun.
In China, Lu Xunrsquo; s works are of high popularity and reputation. And one of his works, Ah Q Zheng Zhuan has already been translated into more then fifty languages because of itrsquo;s well portrayed character of Ah Q and his “spirit” in this satire story. As the novel contains a lot of culture-loaded words, idioms, and the mix of classical style of writing and colloquial Chinese, this paper chooses two English versions, quite highly remarked, to take a research to see if the meaning, culture and style are well conveyed in the translations. By analyzing Lyell and Yan Xianyirsquo;s translation methods used in the Ah Q Zheng Zhuan, viewing from the level of word
(culturally-loaded words), sentences (culturally-loaded sentences, the figure of speech of sentence), and the discourse(dialogue), the paper tries to find out how their translations achieve functional equivalence and whether they successfully realize the closet natural equivalence. And if not, what can be done to improve it.
2.1 Methodology of the research
In order to make a study of Ah Q Zheng Zhua from the Perspective of Functional Equivalence, literature study is carried out at first. To get the research background, the translation theory, novel, author and two translations are to be read. Then it comes to the comparative study, using comparison and contrast, through sample-analysis to access the two versions if their meaning, culture and style are close to a natural equivalence.
