Jane Austen is the first great woman writer and one of the most widely read writers inEnglish literature. Her achievement represents that women are playing an increasingly important role in the literary stage. Jane Austen and her works have been drawing much attention from critics. In 1815 the novel Emma with its subtle structure, a full description of the characters, witty and delicate language, was published in three volumes and became hermost perfect mature accomplishment. But comments on Emma have never been unified and its early readers thought there was no story, even more, there was noting in Emma which was full of controversy(1985). As early as in the 19th century, many scholars started to study her woks. From then on, her works have been studied widely from different aspects such as her writing strategies, womens female consciousness, womens discourse rights and womens marriage view. In the past, academic circles did a lot researches on Jane Austen and her works, especially her view of love and marriage. Scholars tended to focus on her another great workPride and Prejudice. Now the studies on Emma with Feminist Criticism and Feminist Narratology are quite little. However, after more than two centuries changes, Emma, as anAustens later mature novel, gradually gains academic recognition and affirmation and its literature value also has been confirmed. In Austens novels, Emma may not be the most popular one, but undoubtedly has the most mature style and the most complete structure. Inthis novel, whether the author has an understanding of reality and the thought of life or the writing skills are more profound, adept and perfect than her earlier works. Emma fullyembodies the Austens language competence, the ability of shaping character and skills ofliterature exploration(1998). More and more scholars find Emma more fully explain the view of feminism than her other work. Since the publication of Emma, the novel has been attracting increasing attention of scholars. The main research directions are divided into the following aspects: an analysis of view of marriage and love in Emma, an analysis of feminism in Emma, an analysis of feminist consciousness in Emma, an analysis of female and male characters, theuse of irony, the heroines process of growth, speech act theory in linguistic theories etc..These scholars make a great contribution to the study of Emma. For example: Xie Hongmang analyzed Austens feminist views in Emma(2018); Wang Cheng analyzed ironic language and different ironic language styles of characters in Emma(2011); Eagleton analyzed the female consciousness reflected in Emma. In pure literature field, scholars mainly focus on the creation and analysis of female images with the theory of feminist literary criticism(1998).There are few theses on Emma in feminist narratology at home and abroad. Susan S. Lancer, the author of Fiction of Authority, probed into Austens novels in the aspect of feminism and narratology and studied free indirect discourse and gendered authority(2001). Lots of new critical methods predominate in the trend of studying and many achievements have been received. However, there is even no thorough and systematic study with feministnarratology. Scholars in China focus on the field of female authorial voice, narrativestrategies.
