Literature Review of Narrative Study on Novel Atonement and its Film Adaptation

Abstract: One of Ian McEwanrsquo;s best novels, Atonement, has been adapted into a film of the same title. The application of varied point of view is major feature of the novel. In the movie adaption, the director tried to achieve the effect of the novelrsquo;s writing technique. ( especially in the aspect of point of view.)

A large amount of researches has been done in Ian McEwanrsquo;s Atonement as well as its movie adaption. Some critics focus on the themes. Some studies focus on the narrative techniques and narrative features. However, the researches focus on both Atonement and its film adaption are limited. The development and limits in displaying multiple point of view while adapting a novel into screen deserve close study. Since point of view can be not only included in narratology but also stylistics, the stylistics will also be taken into discussion based on the main content in narratology.

一、文献综述

Atonement has been generally acknowledged as Ian McEwanrsquo;s greatest achievement. Since Atonement came out and received numerous awards, critics at home and abroad has studied this novel from diversified aspects. In 2007, after it was adapted into screen, there has been more articles discussing the novel as well as its film adaption. In the below, the thesis will firstly introduce the novel Atonement and its writer Ian McEwan, then the former studies will be introduced. And the theories involved and my will be presented at the end of this thesis.

Ian McEwan is one of the most influential British novelists around the world. He is famous for the various writing techniques employed in his novels. Since film industry is booming in contemporary world, his writing is inseparably connected to the culture of film. In impetuous social environment, he is able to be one of the few novelists whose works could be both popular and with great literature values at the same time.

Ever since he first published a collection of his short stories in 1975, he has finished ten novels, two collections of short stories as well as some childrens fiction or plays.

He won the Whitbread Novel Award (1987) and later the Prix Femina Etranger (1993) for The Child in Time.He had been nominated for the Booker Prize for four times before he finally received the award for the novel Amsterdam in 1998. He also won the WH Smith Literary Award (2002), National Book Critics Circle Fiction Award (2003), Los Angeles Times Prize for Fiction(2003), and the Santiago Prize for the European Novel (2004) for the same work.Then he won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize(2006) for his novel Saturday. Some of his works have been adapted into TV plays and movies and turned out to be commercial success.
