2.1 English pronunciation

2.1.1 The Concept of English Pronunciation

Like many languages, English has wide variation in pronunciation, both historically and from dialect to dialect. In general, however, the regional dialects of English share a largely similar (though not identical) phonological system.

Phonological analysis of English often concentrates on, or uses as a reference point, one or more of the prestige or standard accents, such as Received Pronunciation for England, General American for the United States, and General Australian for Australia. Nevertheless, many other dialects of English are spoken, which do not necessarily descend from any of these standardized accents. Information about these standardized accents functions only as a limited guide to all of English phonology, which one can later expand upon once one becomes more familiar with some of the many other dialects of English that are spoken.

2.1.2 The Issues of English Pronunciation in China

After many years of traditional language English teaching methods, many Chinese students still have poor spoken English, experiencing problems with communicating in English because of difficulties with pronunciation and accent (Wang 2007). Problems with pronunciation and intonation give heavy regional Chinese accents to English although the grammar may be perfect. The result is poorly understood spoken English (Shoebottom 2011).

Due to the huge population of English learners in China, many meaningful and significant activities cannot be implemented. Except for the limitation on native learning environments, there are a great number of differences between Chinese character and English character pronunciation, which increase the difficulty of acquiring a native-like pronunciation. Besides, the high cost of native English speaking teachersrsquo; classes can only be afforded in developed cities gathering around the eastern coast.

English and Chinese have many important differences as they belong to two different language families. These differences suggest Shoebottom (2011) include:
