Study on the Application of the Flipped Classroom

1.literature review

The flipped classroom is a blended learning model, in which students learning by computers, watching teaching videos at home and doing exercises, solving problems with teachers and classmates in class, meanwhile they can consolidate knowledge.

In 1980s, Eric put forward the concept of peer instruction, which stimulates studentsrsquo; interest by using information technology and makes a hit on physical teaching .In 2000,Lage and Treglia published a paper about the revolution of traditional teaching and learning, the revolution tried to creates an learning environment in which studentsrsquo; interest can be aroused .Those theories lay the foundation for the forming of the flipped classroom. Baker Wesley published a paper named” The Classroom Flip: Using Web Course Management Tools To Become the Guide by the Side” at 11th international college conference of teaching and learning, since then ,the concept of flipped classroom has been proposed formally.

In 2000, University of Wisconsin-Madison first used an eTeach software in computer science course with streaming video of the lecturer and coordinated slides. The university built a center in 2011 focuses on flipped classroom and blended learning.

In 2004, educator Salman Khan recorded some teaching videos for his younger cousin, which put knowledge into different parts, and makes learning more flexible. The one-to-one tutoring model soon comes into vogue among educators and learners. Saw the advantages of online learning, Salman built “Khan Academy” which includes all kinds of teaching videos recorded by famous professors from all over the world with different subjects for leaners to choose what they want to learn.

In 2007, Strayer published a research which compared the activities in traditional classroom and the intelligent tutoring system in the flipped classroom, and based on the comparison he explored the flipped classroomrsquo;s effect on learning environment. The research highlights the importance of attending to the ways the coordination of out-of-class and in-class activities can positively and negatively influence how students engage course tasks.

The process of the forming of flipped classroom is slow and orderly and the flipped classroom is based on peer instruction and gradually has its own theory and resources.
