一、选题的背景与意义

What actually happens is worth studying. As an indispensable component of culture, taboos, especially swear words should not be ignored in academic research. Though much work has been done on the static analysis of swear words from metalinguistic and cultural perspective, insufficient attention was paid to sociolinguistic and pragmatic aspects of swearing language.

Swear words are used for self- expression and the convey of emotions in most cases. Even if swearing violates the Politeness Principle in conversations, swear words are not always dirty under certain situations. For instance, in some circumstances, swear words indicate the closeness and friendship between speakers. Hence, swear words need to be analyzed according to different settings, participants and activities. An objective knowledge of English taboos is of both academic and practical value, which helps us get rid of the misunderstanding of swear words in unique situation and the misuse of words in translation.

二、研究的主要内容与预期目标

This paper discusses the appropriateness of swear words along with the situations under which they are used. First, it looks back upon and summarizes the previous studies which centers on the semantic and cultural analysis of English taboos. Then the appropriateness of taboo usage is discussed by exploring the contextual use in three areas—literature, the Internet and daily life. And contexts where taboos are used are discussed under the direction of the concept of utterance meaning and the theory of Speech Act Theory. After that, contextual features and functions of swear words are summarized by referring to M. A. K. Hallidayrsquo;s Systemic Functional Grammar. Next, advice is given on the likelihood of swearword usage based on independent findings. Finally come a summary of this paper, its limitations and suggestions on future research. This paper aims to study the semantic figures of taboos and further examine the pragmatic features in order that a clear and well-structured classification of the fair use of taboos in specific situations is obtained.

三、拟采用的研究方法

This thesis explores the cases of swearword use by using online corpora for reference, such as COCA, BNC, Webcorp. Moreover, it analyses the discourse from three aspects: ideational, textual, interpersonal functions and discusses the contextual use of taboos based on different situations. It also studies the related literature before reaching the conclusion.
